Biography
A
Aleksandr Sergeyevich Taneyev (January 17, 1850 – February 7, 1918) was a Russia|Russian composer of the late Romantic music|Romantic era, specifically of the Musical nationalism|nationalist school. He was an uncle of the more famous composer Sergei Taneyev. He was a career civil servant, eventually rising in the bureaucracy to the position of secretary to the imperial chancellery, where he had considerable influence. After 1900 he was the head of the folksong collection project of the Russian Geographical Society; many of the songs he collected were later arranged and published by Anatoly Konstantinovich Lyadov|Anatoly Lyadov. He wrote several operas, most of which were quickly performed due to his connections with the aristocracy; however none have survived in the repertory. He also wrote three symphony|symphonies, as well as songs, piano music, and chamber music, much of which is light in character, and all of which shows the influence of the other Russian nationalist composers (Rimsky-Korsakov, Balakirev, and Liadov among others). == References == * Edward Garden: "Aleksandr Taneyev", Grove Music Online ed.
