Alexander D. Smith (born May 7, 1984 in Seattle,
Washington,  United States|USA 6'4 217lbs) was the
first pick in the 2005 NFL Draft. He played
quarterback for the University of Utah while
wearing number 11.  He finished 5th in the voting
for the 2005 Heisman Trophy.  He was selected by
the San Francisco 49ers first overall in the 2005
NFL Draft. Smith is  extremely intelligent; he
graduated from Utah University in just two years
with a 3.71 GPA. He is a very athletic and mobile
quarterback, but does not possess great arm
strength and is sometimes criticized for his long
windup on his throws.

Smith is from La Mesa, California where he played
football at Helix High School. Schoolmate Reggie
Bush was also a top 5 Heisman finalist in 2004,
the first time two finalists have come from the
same high school.

On April 23, 2005 the San Francisco 49ers made
Alex Smith the first pick in the NFL Draft.

In July 2005, Smith agreed to a six-year, $49.5
million contract with the 49ers; the contract
includes $24 million in guaranteed money. He will
wear jersey number 11 with the 49ers.
