Biography of Anthony Mundine - Boxer
Biography
A
Anthony "The Man" Mundine is a boxing|boxer and former Australia|Australian Rugby League player. He is the son of boxer Tony Mundine, boxer|Tony Mundine, a Middleweight contender during the 1970s who is also his trainer. He was named the 2000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Person of the Year. Mundine has had a stormy relationship with the popular media. His conversion to Islam in 1999, self-promotion and outspoken opinions have cost him heavily. As a boxer he has attempted to model his media profile on that of Muhammad Ali. He has declared himself the best Rugby League player in the world in the season of 99. There was little doubt over that statement, as statistics showed each time he came up against Brad Fittler(regarded as the best 5/8 of the past decade), and the great Laurie Daley, he came out on top in almost every match played vs Fittler's Roosters and Daley's Raiders. But has had limited State of Origin experience, with three games for New South Wales. "The Paper" reported that on the reaction to Mundine's comments on 9/11 that "America's brought it upon themselves for what they've done in the history of time". Mundine subsequently apologised and said, "I condemn killings on any side and all acts of terrorism. I know people who were in New York on September 11th and my heart and soul goes out to those families who lost loved ones." The World Boxing Council|WBC removed his world ranking and the IBF also responded negatively. Many Australians see him as a 'wanker', although there is no doubt he is a fine athlete. He is featured on rapper Joel Turner (musician)|Joel Turner's single "Knock U Out" which peaked in the top 20 of the Australian ARIAnet singles chart in 2005. ==Rugby== He believes he was victimised and that this limited his rugby league career. Mundine accused the NSW and Australian selectors of racism when he was left out of the Australian squad to tour Britain at the end 1998. After he was statistically better then any other five eighth in the NRL. He played with the St. George-Illawarra Dragons Rugby League team, where he was known as 'Choc'. He controversially turned down what was then the largest ever offer in Rugby League history of $600,000, to pursue a career in boxing. Early 2005 he announced he was to make a return to Rugby League. ==Boxing== He was crowned World Super Middleweight Champion of the World after defeating Antwon Echols in 2003. Mundine failed in his attempt to gain the WBA middleweight title after losing by decision to Mikkel Kessler on August 6, 2005 at the Sydney Superdome, although many people believe that his bout with Kessler was the best he had fought in his short career. ==External links== http://www.thepaper.org.au/issues/024/024gagging_m undine.html "The Paper" on the reaction to Mundine's comments on 9/11 Australia-bio-stub
