Archibald "Archie" Gemmill (born March 24, 1947 in Paisley, Scotland|Paisley) is a former Scotland|Scottish football (soccer)|footballer. He scored what is considered one of the greatest goals in the history of sport, for Scotland national football team|Scotland against the Netherlands national football team|Netherlands at the Football World Cup 1978|1978 World Cup. On June 11, 1978, Scotland needed to win the game by three goals to advance. With his team leading 2-1 in the 68th minute, Gemmill ran around three Dutch defenders and scored a fantastic goal to give his countrymen hope. Unfortunately, three minutes later the Netherlands replied, the game ending with a 3-2 result, denying Scotland a spot in the second round. The goal was later made a part of a memorable scene in the movie Trainspotting (movie)|Trainspotting, in which characters Tommy and Lizzie settle down to watch a homemade pornography|porno film, only to see it has been replaced with a tape which has the goal: at the same time, Rent-boy (Ewan McGregor), who earlier had switched the tapes and borrowed the "goals tape", says (after finishing a night of sex with Dianne, whom he just met), "I haven't felt this good since Archie Gemmill scored against Holland in 1978!" Overall, Gemmill played 43 times for Scotland, scoring eight goals. On the club level, he played for St Mirren F.C.|St Mirren, Preston North End F.C.|Preston North End, Derby County F.C.|Derby County, Nottingham Forest F.C.|Nottingham Forest, Birmingham City F.C.|Birmingham City, Wigan Athletic F.C.|Wigan Athletic, and the Jacksonville Tea Men of the North American Soccer League|NASL. Archie's son, Scot Gemmill, is a Scottish international as well.
