Biography of Cowboy Junkies - Country Musicians
Biography
T
The group formed in Toronto in 1985. The band's name was simply a random choice as they approached their first ever gig, but it has come to perfectly represent their sound. (Some sources may credit Townes Van Zandt's song "Cowboy Junkies Lament" as the source of the band's name, but that song was written especially for Cowboy Junkies several years after they coined the name.) The Trinity Session is perhaps their best known record, recorded live in a single day on a single microphone in a church in Toronto. This album also included a unique cover version of Lou Reed's "Sweet Jane". Reed reportedly liked the Junkies' version of the song better than his own, and began performing their version in concert. None of the band's subsequent albums have been hits outside of Canada, although the band have maintained a dedicated following and have continued to have chart hits in their native country. Following their 1998 album Miles From Our Home, Cowboy Junkies were dropped from their major label contract. They have continued to release albums on their own independent label, Latent Records. ==Personnel== * Margo Timmins, vocals * Michael Timmins, guitars * Peter Timmins, drums * Alan Anton, bass guitar|bass ==Discography== * Whites Off Earth Now!!, 1986 * The Trinity Session, 1988 * The Caution Horses, 1990 * Black Eyed Man, 1992 * Pale Sun Crescent Moon, 1993 * 200 More Miles: Live Performances 1985-1994, 1995 * Studio: Selected Studio Recordings 1986-1995, 1996 * Lay it Down, 1996 * Miles From Our Home, 1998 * Rarities, B Sides and Slow, Sad Waltzes, 1999 * Waltz Across America, 2000 * Open (Cowboy Junkies album)|Open, 2001 * BBC Radio One Sessions, 2002 * Open Road CD/DVD, 2002 * In the Time Before Llamas, 2003 * One Soul Now, 2004 * Early 21st Century Blues, 2005 RCA Records, the band's label from 1988 to 1996, has also released two best-of albums.
