Dame Edith Mary Evans (February 8, 1888 - October 14, 1976) was a highly regarded United Kingdom|British actress. Born in London, her stage appearances included numerous works by Shakespeare, Congreve, Ibsen, Wycherley, Oscar Wilde|Wilde, and contemporary playrights including George Bernard Shaw|Shaw, Enid Bagnold, Christopher Fry and Noel Coward|Coward. She had begun her film career in 1915, but was noted mostly for her stage work until she appeared in the 1949 film The Last Days of Dolwyn.
