Biography of Edward Glaeser - Economist
Biography
E
Edward Glaeser is currently (as of 2005) one of the most dynamic economists in the academia. He was educated at the prestigious Collegiate school in New York City before obtaining his B.A from Princeton and his PhD in Economcis from the University of Chicago.Glaeser joined the faculty of Harvard in 1993. He is the director of the Tauman Center for State and Local Government as well as an editor of the Quarterly Journal of Economics. Glaeser's connections with both Chicago and Harvard makes him a linkage between the Chicago School of Economics and the Cambridge school. =="A Renaissance Man"== Glaeser has made substantial contribution to the empirical works on urban economics. In particular, his works examining the historical evolution of economic hubs like Boston and the New York City has had major influence on both economics as well as urban geography. In addition, Glaeser has also written widely on a variety of other topics, including social economics, institutional economics, the economics of hatred and the economics of religion, from both contemporaneous as well historical perspective. Despite the seemingly disparaging topic that he has examined,a unifying theme is readily present in many of his researches; namely the application of economic theory, especially game theory as the main instrument to explain human behaviors, economic or otherwise. The models developed using the above method are then confronted with observed real world evidence,so as to verify their applicability. Much of his works on appied economics are done in collaboration with his Harvard collegeue, Andrei Shleifer. ==External Links== *http://www.ksg.harvard.edu/ksgnews/KSGInsight/ Glaeser on the differences between U.S and European welfare policies *http://post.economics.harvard.edu/faculty/glaeser /glaeser.html Glaeser's homepage at the department of economics
