Biography of Fredric March - Actor
Biography
F
Fredric March (Ernest Frederick McIntyre Bickel) (August 31, 1897 – April 14, 1975) was an Academy Award winning American actor. March was born in Racine, Wisconsin. He began as a banker, but an emergency appendectomy caused him to reevaluate his life, and in 1920 he began to be cast as an extra in movies made in New York, New York|New York. He appeared on Broadway in 1926, and won an Oscar nomination in 1930 for The Royal Family of Broadway, in which he played a role based upon John Barrymore. March won the Oscar in 1932 for Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and again in 1946 for The Best Years of Our Lives. March was one of the few actors to resist the studios, and was able to pick and choose his roles, in the process also avoiding typecasting. By this time, he was working on Broadway as often as in Hollywood, and his screen career was not as prolific as it had been. Perhaps his greatest late-in-life role was in Inherit the Wind in 1960, opposite Spencer Tracy. Throughout his life, he was a proponent of liberal political causes, and was a steady supporter of the United States Democratic Party|Democratic Party. When March underwent surgery for prostate cancer in 1972, it seemed his career was over, yet he managed to give one last great performance in The Iceman Cometh. Ironically, co-star Robert Ryan was entering the final stages of lung cancer, so the film was shot on a deathwatch. Fredric March died in Los Angeles, California), at the age of seventy-seven. He was married to the actress Florence Eldridge from 1927 until his death. === Academy Awards and nominations === *1952 Nominated Death of a Salesman *1947 Won The Best Years of Our Lives *1938 Nominated A Star Is Born (1937)|A Star is Born *1932 Won Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1931 movie)|Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde *1931 Nominated The Royal Family of Broadway === Filmography === *The Iceman Cometh *...tick...tick...tick... *Hombre *Seven Days in May *The Condemned of Altona *The Young Doctors *Inherit the Wind *Middle of the Night *"Tales from Dickens" *The Winslow Boy *Albert Schweitzer *Island of Allah *Alexander the Great (movie)|Alexander the Great *The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit *The Desperate Hours *The Bridges at Toko-Ri *A Christmas Carol *Executive Suite *Man on a Tightrope *Death of a Salesman *Its a Big Country|It's a Big Country *The Titan, Story of Michelangelo *Christopher Columbus (movie)|Christopher Columbus *An Act of Murder *Another Part of the Forest *The Best Years of Our Lives *Tomorrow the World! *The Adventures of Mark Twain *I Married a Witch *Lake Carrier *Bedtime Story *One Foot in Heaven *So Ends Our Night *Victory (movie)|Victory *Susan and God *Lights Out in Europe *The 400 Million *Trade Winds *There Goes My Heart *The Buccaneer *Nothing Sacred *A Star Is Born (1937)|A Star is Born *Anthony Adverse *Mary of Scotland *The Road to Glory *The Dark Angel (1935 film)|The Dark Angel *Anna Karenina (movie)|Anna Karenina *Les Misérables (1935 movie)|Les Misérables *The Barretts of Wimpole Street *Good Dame *We Live Again *The Affairs of Cellini *Death Takes a Holiday *All of Me *Design for Living *The Eagle and the Hawk *Tonight Is Ours *The Sign of the Cross *Smilin' Through *Make Me a Star *Merrily We Go to Hell *Strangers in Love *Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde *My Sin *Night Angel *Honor Among Lovers *The Royal Family of Broadway *Laughter (movie)|Laughter *Manslaughter (movie)|Manslaughter *True to the Navy *Ladies Love Brutes *Sarah and Son *The Marriage Playground *Footlights and Fools *Jealousy (movie)|Jealousy *Paris Bound *The Studio Murder Mystery *The Wild Party *The Dummy (movie)|The Dummy *The Great Adventure *Paying the Piper *The Devil (movie)|The Devil *The Education of Elizabeth March has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 1616 Vine Street. ==External links== *imdb name|id=0545298|name=Fredric March
