Gheorghe "GicÄ" Popescu (born December 9, 1967 in Calafat) is a former Romanian football (soccer) defender (football)|defender, a key part of the Romania national football team|Romanian national team in the 1990s. On the club level, Popescu played for FC Universitatea Craiova|Universitatea Craiova (1985-90, he spent a part of the 1987-88 season with FC Steaua Bucuresti|Steaua Bucharest), PSV Eindhoven (1990-94), Tottenham Hotspur F.C.|Tottenham Hotspur (1994-95), FC Barcelona|Barcelona (1995-97), Galatasaray (1997-2001), U.S. Lecce|Lecce (2001-02), FC Dinamo Bucuresti|Dinamo Bucharest (2002) and Hannover 96 (2003). For the Romanian national team, Popescu stands among its all-time cap leaders with 115, in which he scored 16 goals.
