Joan Davis

J
Joan Davis (born Madonna Josephine Davis June 29,
1907 in St. Paul, Minnesota; died May 22, 1961 in
Palm Springs, California) was a popular comedienne
and actress on radio and TV. Getting her start in
vaudeville with her husband Si Wills, she was one
of the few female clowns of her time.

Davis co-starred with Lou Costello in Hold That
Ghost (1941), but she was best known for her
sitcom I Married Joan, which co-starred Jim Backus
as her hapless husband, and her real-life
daughter, Beverly Wills, as her TV daughter.

Freakishly, her remaining family (mother,
daughter, grandkids) all died in a house fire in
October, 1963.
