Joan Lorring (born Mary Magdalene Ellis on 17 April 1926) is a United States|American actress. Lorring was born in Hong Kong, but fled with her family in 1939 following the Japanese invasion. The family settled in the United States, where young Mary began working in radio. Her first film role was in Song of Russia in 1944. She made The Bridge of San Luis Rey in the same year, and, in 1945, starred opposite Bette Davis in The Corn is Green. She was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for the role. In the early 1950s, Lorring began starring in television, acting in starring roles in the soap opera Valiant Lady and the sitcom Norby (TV series)|Norby. She had a small role in the 1970s in the soap opera Ryan's Hope. actor-stub
