Jodie Foster

A
Alicia Christian "Jodie" Foster (born November 19,
1962) is an United States|American Actor|actress
and Film director|director.

==Life and career==
Foster was born in Los Angeles, California|Los
Angeles, California where she attended an
exclusive prep school, the Lycée Français de Los
Angeles, before going on to Yale University, where
she earned a BA in literature, graduating magna
cum laude in 1985.

Foster has made more than 100 appearances in film
and television since the age of five. She began
her career at the age of two in television
commercials with an appearance as the Coppertone
Girl. Her first role was in an episode of Mayberry
R.F.D., in 1969 and then went on to appear in a
variety of television series. Foster made her film
debut in Menace on the Mountain 1970 (TV). She
appeared in several Disney movies, starting with
Napoleon and Samantha (1972) and followed by One
Little Indian (1973), Freaky Friday (1977), and
Candleshoe (1977).

In film, at the age of 14, she earned a nomination
for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress
for her role as a teen prostitute in Martin
Scorsese's film Taxi Driver opposite Robert De
Niro. De Niro's character in Taxi Driver intended
to assassinate a presidential candidate, and in
1981 John Hinckley shot President of the United
States of America|U.S. President Ronald Reagan,
claiming he did it to impress Foster.

She is fluent enough in the French language that
she has performed in French films. Foster won the
first of her two Golden Globe Award for Best
Actress - Motion Picture Drama|Golden Globe and
Academy Award for Best Actress|Academy Awards as
Best Actress for her role as a gang-rape victim in
The Accused (1988). She earned her second for her
co-starring role opposite Anthony Hopkins in
1991's The Silence of the Lambs.

She made her debut as director in 1991 with Little
Man Tate, a drama about a child genius in which
she also costarred. She also directed Home for the
Holidays (1995), a comedy starring Holly Hunter
and Robert Downey Jr.. She went into producing in
1994 with the acclaimed Nell, the story of young
woman raised in an isolated place who has to
return to civilization. Foster owns Production
Company Egg Pictures in Los Angeles, founded in
1990.

Foster is intensively private about her personal
life. Having given birth to two sons (Charles in
1998 and Kit in 2001), she has never revealed the
identity of the father of the boys or if the boys
even share the same father. Because of this and
because she has lived with a female companion,
actress Cydney Bernard for several years, many
suspect she is a lesbian, though she personally
has never made any public statement regarding her
sexual orientation. Her brother's biography
identifies her as such, but since the book is
unauthorized, it is highly suspect.
