He graduated to leading roles and in 1948 was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor for his starring role in Body and Soul (1947 film)|Body and Soul. Garfield was given a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 7065 Hollywood Blvd. Involved in liberal politics, Garfield became caught up in the Joseph McCarthy|McCarthy Communism|Communist scare of the late 1940s and, even though he denied having ever been a Communist, his forced testimony before the House Un-American Activities Committee damaged his career and he was Hollywood blacklist|blacklisted by the Hollywood movie studio bosses.
