Biography of Lanny Wadkins - Golfer
Biography
L
Lanny Wadkins (born December 5, 1949 in Richmond, Virginia) is an United States of America|American golf|golfer. Wadkins attended Wake Forest University. He won the U.S. Amateur Championship in 1970 and turned professional in 1971. Wins soon followed, with one PGA Tour win in 1972 and two in 1973. In one major championship victory, a PGA Championship followed in 1977, and he continued to pick up a win more seasons than not until 1992, when he achieved his twenty-first and final PGA Tour victory at the Canon Greater Hartford Open. He played for the United States in the Ryder Cup eight times (1977, 1979, 1983, 1985, 1987, 1989, 1991 and 1993), which as of 2004 was the tied highest number of appearances in the competition by an American, alongside Raymond Floyd. From 2000 Wadkins played on the Champions Tour, picking up a win at the ACE Group Classic that year. However, he divided his time between competition and broadcasting work with CBS Sports and did not become a regular winner at senior level. ==PGA Tour wins== *1972 Sahara Invitational *1973 Byron Nelson Golf Classic, USI Classic *1977 PGA Championship, World Series of Golf *1979 Glen Campbell-Los Angeles Open, Tournament Players Championship *1982 Phoenix Open, MONY Tournament of Champions, Buick Open *1983 Greater Greensboro Open, MONY Tournament of Champions *1985 Bob Hope Classic, Los Angeles Open, Walt Disney World/Oldsmobile Classic *1987 Doral-Ryder Open *1988 Hawaiian Open, Colonial National Invitation *1990 Anheuser-Busch Golf Classic *1991 United Hawaiian Open *1992 Canon Greater Hartford Open ==Other wins== *1968 Southern Amateur *1970 U.S. Amateur, Southern Amateur *1978 Victorian PGA Championship, Canadian PGA Championship *1979 Bridgestone Open *1980 PGA Grand Slam of Golf (United States - unoffical event) *1984 World Nissan Championship *1990 Fred Meyer Challenge (with Bobby Wadkins) *2000 ACE Group Classic (Champions Tour) ==See also== *Golfers with most PGA Tour wins ==External links== *http://www.pgatour.com/players/bio/132136 Profile on the PGA Tour's official site *http://www.golfstarsonline.com/W/Lanny_Wadkins/ Golf Stars Online - links to features and profiles
