Cleanup Martin Hayter Short Order_of_Canada|CM (born March 26, 1950) is an actor, writer, and producer best known for his comedy work. He was born in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Short has created many memorable characters over the years, most notably Jiminy Glick and Ed Grimley. He perhaps is best known for his work on SCTV and Saturday Night Live. Short was named a Member of the Order of Canada in 1994. ==Family== His father was Charles Short, an executive with Canada's largest steel company, who came to North America as a stowaway from Ireland at the age of 21; he died in 1972 due to complications from a stroke. He married Short's mother in 1935. His mother, Olive, was a violinist and a former child prodigy. She was the first female concertmaster in North America--concertmaster of the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra. She died of cancer in 1970. His cousin, Clare Short, is a prominent member of the British Parliament. Short is the youngest of five. His older brother David died in a car accident in 1965, when Short was 12 years old. His brother Michael, a comedy writer, won the prestigious Emmy award twice. His brother Brian remains in Canada, and is vice president of Dover Industries. His sister, Nora, is an anesthesiologist. He met his wife, actress Nancy Dolman, in 1972. She was an understudy in the Toronto production of Godspell, in which Short was cast alongside Gilda Radner, Eugene Levy, Andrea Martin and under musical director Paul Shaffer. Short and Dolman married in 1980, sharing a double honeymoon with actress and dear friend Andrea Martin, who married Nancy's brother--screenwriter Bob Dolman.
