==Family==
His father was Charles Short, an executive with
Canada's largest steel company, who came to North
America as a stowaway from Ireland at the age of
21; he died in 1972 due to complications from a
stroke. He married Short's mother in 1935. His
mother, Olive, was a violinist and a former child
prodigy. She was the first female concertmaster
in North America--concertmaster of the Hamilton
Philharmonic Orchestra. She died of cancer in
1970. His cousin, Clare Short, is a prominent

Short is the youngest of five. His older brother
David died in a car accident in 1965, when Short

brother Brian remains in Canada, and is vice
president of Dover Industries. His sister, Nora,

He met his wife, actress Nancy Dolman, in 1972.
She was an understudy in the Toronto production of
Godspell, in which Short was cast alongside Gilda
Radner, Eugene Levy, Andrea Martin and under
musical director Paul Shaffer. Short and Dolman
married in 1980, sharing a double honeymoon with
actress and dear friend Andrea Martin, who married
Nancy's brother--screenwriter Bob Dolman.
