Biography of Os Mutantes - Latin Musicians
Biography
O
Os Mutantes (Portuguese language|Portuguese for The Mutants) was an influential band that arose out of Brazil|Brazil's Tropicalia movement of the late 1960s. ==Style== Even during a period of worldwide musical experimentation and exploration, Os Mutantes stood out as being inventive with their musical styles, spanning psychedelia, Pop music|pop, blues, and rock and roll|rock genres. The group experimented with distortion, wordplay, feedback, and unusual instruments to create a free and playful pop sound. According to the liner notes of Everything is Possible, one of the main instruments on Le Premier Bonheur du Jour is an aerosol bugspray can. In their later years, Os Mutantes were under a high influence of progressive rock. ==History== Os Mutantes was formed in SĂŁo Paulo (city)|SĂŁo Paulo, Brazil, in 1966 by brothers Arnaldo Baptista (bass, keyboards and vocals) and SĂ©rgio Dias (guitars and vocals) along with their lead singer Rita Lee. In 1971 the bassist Liminha and drummer Dinho officialy joined the band. They delivered five albums before Lee departed, or was fired (accounts differ), in 1972 to start her own solo career. Arnaldo left the band in 73 due to problems with LSD, followed by Dinho and, a year later, Liminha. With only SĂ©rgio Dias as an original member, the band continued on with other musicians until its dissolution in 1978. ==Contemporaries== Os Mutantes worked closely with other tropicalia and MPB artists of their time, including: * Caetano Veloso * Gilberto Gil * Gal Costa * Tom ZĂ© * Nara LeĂŁo ==Influence== Os Mutantes influenced a great deal of Brazilian bands such as Pato Fu and JĂșpiter Maçã. Many underground, indie and independent recent bands are retaking their advances in Brazilian music and rock, such as humor and experimentalism. Though Os Mutantes never spread to mainstream Western consciousness, they did influence many English-speaking artists. For example, Kurt Cobain publicly requested a reunion tour from the trio in 1993, Beck released an experimental album called Mutations (album)|Mutations with the hit song Tropicalia, and David Byrne wore a Mutantes style giant suit for Talking Heads performances, and assembled Everything is Possible, the Os Mutantes' compilation album released by Luaka Bop in 1999. ==Discography== *Os Mutantes (1968) # Panis et Circenses - (Gilberto Gil / Caetano Veloso) # A Minha Menina - (Jorge Ben) # O RelĂłgio - (Os Mutantes) # Adeus Maria FulĂŽ - (Humberto Teixeira / Sivuca) # Baby - (Caetano Veloso) # Senhor F - (Os Mutantes) # Bat Macumba - (Gilberto Gil / Caetano Veloso) # Le Premier Bonheur du Jour - (Jean Renard / Frank Gerald) # Trem Fantasma - (Caetano Veloso / Os Mutantes) # Tempo no Tempo (Once There Was A Time I Thought) - (John Phillips / Version: Os Mutantes) # Ave Gengis Khan - (Os Mutantes) Participants: RogĂ©rio Duprat (arrangements); Jorge Ben (voice and acoustic guitar); Dirceu (bateria).
