Philemon is the recipient of the Epistle to Philemon, which is a book of the Bible from the New Testament. He was probably an inhabitant of Colossae, and apparently a person of some note among within the Christian church there (Colossians|Col. 4:9; Philemon 1:2). He appears to have become a believer throuugh the teaching of Paul of Tarsus|Paul. In the epistle, Paul calls him a "fellow-labourer". He appears to have hosted the church, and was certainly wealthy enough to own at least one slave (the hapless Onesimus on whose behalf Paul writes the epistle. ----------- Philemon was a character in Greek mythology, husband of Baucis.
