Richard Gordon Scott (born November 7,1928) was sustained to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles on October 1, 1988 and was ordained an apostle on October 6, 1988 following the death of Marion G. Romney. Elder Scott delivers compassionate talks at General Conference, looking directly into the camera, and pleading for repentance and improvements in the lives of the members. He emphasizes the savior's compassion and willingness to forgive past transgressions, and pleads for members to repent and move on with their lives. Elder Scott was a nuclear engineer who did advanced studies at Oak Ridge National Laboratory for the Department of Energy.
