Roseanne Barr

<
Roseanne Barr (November 3, 1952) is an actress,
writer, talk-show host and comedian. Born Roseanne
Cherrie Barr in Salt Lake City, Utah, at various
times in her career she has been known as Roseanne
and Roseanne Arnold, due to marriage.

Roseanne was made famous in the early 1980s with
her stand-up comedy routine, which received
significant critical acclaim for its unglamorized
portrayal of the typical United States| US
middle-class homemaker|housewife. It was during
this routine that she also coined the now
well-known phrase "Domestic Goddess," referring to
a homemaker. This led to her own series on
American Broadcasting Company|ABC, called
Roseanne. The show ran from 1988 to 1997, and
co-starred Emmy Award | Emmy winners Laurie
Metcalf and John Goodman, as well as child actor
Sara Gilbert.

A year after the end of her sitcom's run in 1997,
Roseanne went on to host her own talk show, The
Roseanne Show. The show ran for two years before
it was cancelled in 2000; soon after she ventured
back into stand-up comedy. In 2003 she took on the
dual role of hosting a cooking show and starring
in a reality show about hosting a cooking show.

Roseanne married Bill Pentland on February 4, 1974
and they had three children (Roseanne had a
daughter prior to marriage, whom she gave up for
adoption, but this daughter is now somewhat back
in her life). While taping her show she fell in
love with fellow actor Tom Arnold (actor)|Tom
Arnold and in January of 1990 she divorced
Pentland and married Arnold. Four years later this
marriage also ended in divorce. Roseanne married
Ben Thomas on Valentine's Day in 1995 and they had
one son, Buck Thomas. In 1998 she sued Thomas for
divorce, claiming he had threatened to kidnap
their son. The Thomas family later made up and
Roseanne dropped the charges, but they divorced in
2002.

Of note was the heavily publicized and extremely
controversial occasion on which Barr "performed"
the Star Spangled Banner before a baseball game.
Attempting to bring humor to the song, she
mimicked the behaviour of players by spitting and
grabbing her crotch; barely singing the song, she
instead screeched and screamed it. She was booed
off the field because people thought she was
insulting American tradition.

Roseanne Barr quote

Roseanne Barr

Roseanne Barr frase

Roseanne Barr

Roseanne was an American sitcom which aired on
American Broadcasting Company|ABC from 1988 to
1997, starring the stand-up comedian Roseanne
Barr.

The show portrayed a working class family living
in fictional Lanford, Illinois and struggling to
get by on a limited income. For many years,
Roseanne was, in contrast to many of the most
popular shows at the time honest in its depiction
of family life, and tackled subjects of poverty,
alcoholism, sex, and homosexuality in ways unlike
other shows. Another theme of the show was
Roseanne's dominance in raising the children, with
her husband, Dan feeling that he doesn't have a
voice in what happens in the family, and is not
well informed of what happens in his household.
The show was hugely successful from its beginning,
spending its first six seasons in the top five and
inspiring a rash of stand-ups getting their own
sitcom deals (a practice that continued for years
afterwards). However, by the mid-90's, the series
began to be known more for the public and
backstage scandals of Barr (there was constant
turnover of writers and producers through the
course of the series, including her second
husband, Tom Arnold (actor)|Tom Arnold) and
drifted away from the original source. During the
seventh season, the show dropped sharply in the
ratings, and by the final season in 1997, it had
fallen out of the top thirty.

One of the most documented moments of the series
occurred in the 6th season when Lecy Goranson
(Becky) left the series to attend college. Instead
of writing Becky out, the producers recast her
with Sarah Chalke, and wary of the potential
backlash to reshaping a longtime role, chose to
defuse the criticism. At the end of Chalke's first
episode, the Conner family watched a Bewitched
episode and several characters complained about
the recast of Darren Stevens. Chalke smiled and
said she'd always liked the second Darren best.
Gorenson returned to the role several years later
only to leave again and to be replaced by Chalke.
The final two seasons' opening credits (a morph of
cast photos over the years) alternated shots of
both women for Becky.

The complete first season is due to be released on
DVD on 30 August, 2005.

==Final Season==
spoiler

The final season marked a complete departure from
the rest of the series as the Conner family won
the lottery and lived the high life they could
only previously dream of. The last episode ended
on a fitting note as a 15-minute closing monologue
by Roseanne revealed that after she was given a
writing room the entire series was merely a
fictional story written by the character of
Roseanne Conner and based on her family life and
experiences. She also revealed that whatever she
hadn't liked about her real life, she'd changed in
the story. Roseanne Conner then began a writing
career.
