R
Russell Marion Nelson is a Mormon religious elder,
and a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles,
one of the governing bodies of Mormonism. He was
born September 9, 1924 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
His parents were Marion C. Nelson and Edna
Anderson Nelson. He was known for his perfect
pitch and musical abilities.

He married Dantzel White on August 31, 1945 in the
Salt Lake Temple.

In August, 1947, he became a M.D.. After his
internship at the University of Minnesota, Dr.
Nelson worked on a team that made medical history:
After three challenging years, they developed the
first machine that could perform the functions of
a patient’s heart and lungs during heart surgery
(See heart-lung machine). In 1951, the machine
performed well in the first open-heart operation
on a human being. Four years later, Dr. Nelson
performed the first successful open-heart surgery
using a heart-lung machine in Salt Lake City,
Utah, making Utah the third state in the nation to
reach this important milestone.

He enlisted to serve a two-year term of medical
duty in the U.S. Army during the Korean War; he
served in Korea and Japan and at Walter Reed Army
Medical Center in Washington, D.C. Later he worked
for a year at Massachusetts General Hospital in
Boston, Massachusetts, then returned to the
University of Minnesota for a year and received
his Doctor of Philosophy|Ph.D.. degree in 1954.

Among the various positions he's held
professionally are:
*president of the Thoracic Surgical Directors
Association
*president of the Society for Vascular Surgery
*president of the Utah State Medical Association
*director of the American Board of Thoracic
Surgery
*chairman of the Council on Cardiovascular Surgery
for the American Heart Association
*chairman of the Division of Thoracic Surgery at
the LDS Hospital
*vice-chairman of the board of governors at the
LDS Hospital

Among numerous honors he has received are:
*“Citation for International Service” from the
American Heart Association
*“Golden Plate Award” from the American
Academy of Achievement

In 1972 he performed heart surgery on Spencer W.
Kimball, who later became a president of the
church.

Among the various church callings he has held
before being called to be an apostle were seven
years as a stake president, eight years as general
president of the Sunday School, and four years as
a Regional Representative.

He was sustained to the Quorum of the Twelve
Apostles on April 7, 1984, and was ordained an
apostle April 12, 1984, following the death of
LeGrand Richards.
