Stanislaus Gvoth, known as Stan Mikita (born May
20 1940) is a Slovakia|Slovak-Canada|Canadian ice
hockey player.  He was born in Sokolce,
Czechoslovakia (now Slovakia) as Stanislaus Gvoth,
but moved to Ontario, Canada as a young boy to
avoid the political troubles in the area due to
the Communist control. While living with his
uncle, he changed his name from Gvoth to Mikita.

Mikita became an National Hockey League|NHL hockey
player, playing his entire career with the Chicago
Blackhawks from 1959-1980.  He played centre and
won many awards over his career including the Hart
Trophy (twice), the Art Ross Memorial Trophy (four
times), and the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy (twice),
and a Stanley Cup in 1961.  Upon his retirement he
had the second most points of any NHL player,
after Gordie Howe.

Mikita was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame
in 1983.
