Stephen Rea (born October 31, 1946) is a Irish
actor with an extensive stage and film career,
both in Ireland and abroad. 

Rea was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland. One of
four children in a working-class Protestant
family, he attended Belfast High School and
Queen's University, Belfast, taking a degree in
English. He also trained at the Abbey Theatre
School in Dublin. After appearing on the stage and
in television and film for many years in Ireland
and the United Kingdom|UK, Rea came to
international attention when he was nominated for
the Academy Award for Best Actor for the movie The
Crying Game.

Other films he has appeared in include The Company
of Wolves, Princess Caraboo, Interview With the
Vampire, PrĂȘt-Ă -Porter (film)|PrĂȘt-Ă -Porter,
Michael Collins (film)|Michael Collins, Evelyn
(movie)|Evelyn, FearDotCom, Citizen X, The
Musketeer and The End of the Affair.

Stephen Rea has long been associated with some of
the most important writers in Ireland. His
association with playwright Stewart Parker
1941-1988, and the uncle of Irish theatre director
Lynne Parker for example, began when they were
students together at Queen's. He also helped form
the Field Day Theatre Company in 1980 with writers
Brian Friel, Tom Paulin, Seamus Heaney, and Seamus
Deane. In recognition for his contribution to
Irish theatre, Stephen Rea was given honorary
degrees from both Queen's University, Belfast and
the University of Ulster in 2004.
