Trevor Howard CBE (September 29, 1913 - January 7,
1988) was a United Kingdom|British actor.

Born Trevor Wallace Howard-Smith in Cliftonville,
Kent, he was educated at Clifton College, Bristol
and he attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art
and acted on the London stage for several years
before World War II.  His first major role was in
Brief Encounter in 1945, and starred in The Third
Man (1949),  The Key (1958) and Sons and Lovers
(1960), for which he was nominated for an Academy
Award for Best Actor.

He married the actress Helen Cherry (1915-2001) in
1944.

Howard later appeared in such films as Mutiny on
the Bounty (fiction)#The 1962 Version|Mutiny on
the Bounty (1962), Von Ryan's Express (1965), The
Charge of the Light Brigade (1968), Ryan's
Daughter (1969), The Battle of Britain (film)|The
Battle of Britain (1969), Mary, Queen of Scots
(movie)|Mary, Queen of Scots (1971), Pope Joan
(movie)|Pope Joan (1972), Ludwig (1972
film)|Ludwig (1972), A Doll's House (movie)|A
Doll's House (1973), Superman, The Dawning (1988)
and White Mischief (1988).

He died at the age of 74 from a combination of
bronchitis, influenza and jaundice, in Arkley,
Hertfordshire, in 1988.

He is commemorated by the The Trevor Howard Bar at
The Orange Tree Theatre in London Borough of
Richmond upon Thames|Richmond, Surrey.
