Biography of Vijay Amritraj - Tennis
Biography
V
Vijay Amritraj (born December 14, 1953) is an Indian former tennis champion and actor. Amritraj and his brother, Anand Amritraj, were among the first Indians to play in an International tennis tournament. In 1976, the brothers were semi-finalists in the Wimbledon men's doubles. Amritraj's career started on a very promising note as he upset Rod Laver in the 1971 US Open. He reached the quarter-finals of the US Open in 1973 and 1974, as well as the quarter-final of Wimbledon in 1973, where he lost a close five set match to the eventual winner Jan Kodes. However, his career stagnated around that period and the only other time he reached the quarter-final of a grand-slam was at Wimbledon in 1981. His career high ranking of 16 was reached in July 1980. As a player, Vijay Amritraj was a natural grass-court player who liked to chip, serve and volley. His undoing was his stamina which led him down in crucial five set matches. He had the ability to upset the best of players on his day. One of his most memorable matches was the 2nd round of Wimbledon 1979, where he looked set to beat Bjorn Borg when he was up two sets to one and 4-1 in the 4th set. Amritraj was the captain of the Indian Davis Cup for much of the late 1970's and 1980's, helping India reach the finals in 1974 and 1987. Vijay had a brief acting career, appearing with Roger Moore in the James Bond film, Octopussy and in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home . He has since gone on to become a sports commentator, and has developed a successful multimedia business.
